Fun, Frolic and Fashion Set Bergdorf’s Holiday Windows

It’s all fun and games with Bergdorf Goodman’s holiday windows this year.
And interspersed between the depictions of the chess match, musical chairs, pinball players and a slumber party, there’s the extravagant decor, attention to detail and designer fashion in a mix of winter and next spring’s looks from Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana and others. “Entertainment that’s the word. We’re show business people,” exclaimed David Hoey, BG’s senior director of visual presentation and longtime window dresser.

“Every year we try to find a theme and this one sounds rather ordinary yet we do something extraordinary. We go to great lengths to exploit different craftsmanship techniques, spending countless hours encrusting surfaces with differ types of material, applying zillions of sequins for the chess game,” and employing a range of mediums, such as neon, Italian mosaic tile, needlecraft, soft sculpture, custom painted finishes. “Then we have these custom-made mannequins all laughing and smiling and having a good time, with some vintage mannequin heads from the Sixties,” said Hoey, a 23-year Bergdorf veteran. “All the windows have these bird’s-eye views. That’s the only way to show these games, looking down. it’s uproarious.”
